Fertility Rates Plunge to Historic Lows, High IVF Costs Create Barriers for Families

Growing Access to IVF Offers Hope as More Families Turn to Fertility Treatments

As more Americans seek in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments to start families, efforts to make the process more affordable and accessible are gaining momentum.

With over 85,000 babies born through IVF in 2021, the treatment has become a life-changing option for many. While costs can range from $12,000 to $25,000 per cycle, increasing awareness and policy discussions are driving new initiatives to expand insurance coverage and reduce financial barriers.

Currently, a quarter of employers offer IVF benefits, and a growing number of states are exploring ways to enhance insurance coverage. The federal government also provides support for military personnel, veterans, and federal employees, with calls for further expansion.

Despite the historic low in U.S. fertility rates, advancements in fertility treatments and broader access to IVF offer renewed hope for aspiring parents. As awareness grows, more families may soon have the opportunity to experience the joy of parenthood through assisted reproductive technologies.
