Is the measles outbreak in Texas a big concern?
The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) has confirmed a measles outbreak in the South Plains region, with 58 reported cases. Gaines County accounts for the majority, with 45 infections.
Health officials are urging residents, especially parents, to follow vaccination guidelines to curb the spread. DSHS recommends:
🔹 Infants (6-11 months):
- Receive an early dose of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine.
- Follow CDC guidelines with additional doses at 12-15 months and 4-6 years.
🔹 Children (Over 12 months):
- Unvaccinated children should receive one dose immediately and a second at least 28 days later.
- Those with one dose should get the second as soon as possible.
🔹 Teens & Adults:
- Those with no evidence of immunity are urged to get vaccinated.
Health officials stress the importance of immunization to prevent further spread. Residents are advised to check their vaccination records and consult healthcare providers if unsure about their immunity status.
