New York, NY – Lester Holt, the long-time anchor and managing editor of “NBC Nightly News,” has announced that he will be stepping down from the broadcast at the beginning of the summer after a decade at the helm.
Holt, who has been with NBC News for over two decades, will transition into a full-time role at “Dateline”, where he has served as the principal anchor for nearly 15 years. The announcement was shared in a memo to network staff on Monday.
NBC News has not yet named Holt’s successor for “Nightly News.”
Holt took over as the anchor of “NBC Nightly News” in June 2015, following eight years of anchoring the program’s weekend editions. Before that, he spent 12 years as a co-anchor on “Weekend TODAY.”
In addition to his tenure at “Nightly News,” Holt has been the principal anchor of “Dateline” since September 2011, a role he will now take on full-time.
His departure from “Nightly News” marks the end of an era for the flagship NBC News broadcast, as viewers and industry insiders await news of his replacement.
