The latest data from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) reveals a substantial rise in the number of tax refunds processed so far in 2025 compared to the same period last year. As of January 31, 2025, the IRS has processed 3,231,000 refunds, marking a 23.5% increase from the 2,626,000 refunds issued by February 2, 2024. In addition to the surge in the number of refunds, the average refund amount has also seen a significant jump. Compared to last year’s average of $1,395, the 2025 average refund amount has increased by 38.2%.
According to IRS data, Presidents Day weekend is traditionally one of the busiest periods of the tax filing season, with call volumes to IRS phone lines reaching peak levels.

Additionally, taxpayers can access free self-service options online for further assistance. Taxpayers can use the “Where’s My Refund?” tool to check the status of their tax refund:
